Being pissed and discontent is good for you

The other day I was watching a Swedish documentary about, the so mysteriously named, The Secret. I read the first book a long time ago, apparently there has been two more books and one movie since then (what purpose those could possibly serve, I have no idea). The first reason this entire phenomena pissed me of was that 1. The book was really expensive, and, 2. It was the most pointless and empty book I have ever read (I’ve had bigger spiritual realisations from sci-fi novels, I mean come on). It has 184 pages, they only needed like.. 10. If even. They could have handed it out as a brochure instead.

On the other hand this entire thing really is quite amusing. Because this Ancient, Mysterious, Fragmented secret the was almost lost in Mystic traditions and is so Secret you have never heard about it before is: Think Positive. Wow. Never heard that one before. But it’s also disgusting. Because I hate books, people, movies who tell people what they should feel and what they should think. Like our original feelings and thoughts wasn’t good enough. We need to change because we are not as good as them. Isn’t that like the dictionary definition of brainwashing?

I hate positive thinking. I hate how it has become a “way of life”. When you admit to hating notorious positive thinking people think you mean: “I like negative thinking”. I don’t. Have everyone on this earth forgotten that there’s a goddamn neutral stand in between there? You don’t have to be either. Choosing to only live after either positive or negative thinking is living a lie. Because the world doesn’t work like that. Sometimes good things happens, and sometimes bad things happens. Most of the time your thinking probably had nothing to do with it. Every bookshop I ever go to is drowning in guide to positive thinking bullshit books. I suppose some of them possibly have a good point to them but unfortunately there are to many “hey lets brainwash people into being happy” books for them to be noticed.

Discontent, doubt and anger are not bad feelings. Those are the feelings that have changed the world to the better for centuries. If everyone was content all the time it would still be okay to keep slaves. Women and poor people wouldn’t be allowed to vote or have a voice. Black people wouldn’t be allowed to marry white people and so on, I think you get the point.

Don’t be happy because that’s what you’re “supposed” to do. If you’re angry be angry. If you’re happy be happy. We are people not robots. You can’t just program yourself into feeling a certain way. Be discontent, doubt (it’s healthy trust me), be sad, be angry. Let yourself feel what you feel. It doesn’t make you a worse person. Quite the opposite. It makes you an honest person instead of one who earns 23$ a copy for telling people their feelings are wrong.

How to find your own crystals

If you really, really want to use crystals for magick or jewellery it’s actually not impossible to find them yourself. And you don’t even need a mine! All you need is a forest, patient and sharp eyes. Of course  the conditions for finding crystals will change depending on where you live but If you live near a forest in the northern hemisphere you should have a decent chance. When I first started looking for crystals I did a huge mistake. I went to a quarry. Then I went to another quarry and then a ravine and I found nothing. The best place to find crystals is, believe it or not, here:

Beneath uprooted trees. Probably, I think, because the earth and rocks beneath have been safe for many, many years and also, you don’t have to dig very much because the tree has already done the hard bit! If the earth is stony, as in this case, you’re chances are pretty good, if it’s just mud and marshland I wouldn’t bother with it.

Study each rock carefully. Sometimes you can only see a few millimeters of the actual crystal. Sometimes all you need to reveal a crystal is clear water, a strong brush and a pair of calloused hands. In other cases you may have to grind it. If you don’t have the equipment or knowledge to do it yourself you can ask a jeweller or even at a museum (preferably one with a geological section).

What crystals can you find then? First you should find out what crystals are native to your country (and which are legal for you to pick, this post is adapted to the Scandinavian laws, make sure you check what the laws are in your own country) and where those are usually found. Quartz are what I mostly come upon. From personal experience I have determined that rose quartz are the most uncommon while rock crystals are so common I don’t even understand why anyone would pay for them. I have heard rumours you can find amethysts here in Sweden but I’ve never seen one. Then there’s the crystals I don’t know a name on (I’m not a geologist after all).

Above is three of my crystals in different states. The rose quartz has obviously been polished to reveal it completely. The crystal in the middle is recently picked and has neither been cleaned or polished. The last crystal has been cleaned roughly.

Have fun finding you own crystals and spare Mother Earth while at it! 🙂

Protection against The Evil Eye is mandatory in this family

I come from an emotional family. We fight a lot, we laugh a lot and we cry a lot. If you think you can join a family reunion party with us without bringing some protection against the Evil Eye you’re wrong. Terribly wrong. Someone will surely send you the evil eye, though not always on purpose.

I used to have a really nice amulet I bought in Greece bout unfortunately glass-beads are not forever. So, to survive I made a new one. I had a bracelet lying around and painted some um… fearsome eyes to it. When finished I regretted not using other colours than blue but there are more days to come, and surely there will be uses for more amulets!

While at it I googled evil eye lore, since all I know of it is what I’ve learned from my grandmother, and I discovered that this is a huuuge subject. There are hundreds of different traditions in removing and protecting yourself from the evil eye. I’m definitely going to study it more when time is given. At the moment however I have quite possibly gotten myself an employment. If you know any interesting lore on the evil eye feel free to share!
